In October we heard the sad news of the passing of our League President Bill Edwards.  Bill had served the League as President since inception in 1973, and was always willing to help in any way he could.  When we were looking for a guest speaker for our 21st Anniversary Dinner I spoke to Bill and he said to leave it to him.  A short while later he confirmed that he had secured the services of the late Sir Colin Cowdrey, later to become Lord Cowdrey, free of charge.
Wherever possible he always attended our Annual General Meetings and Annual Presentation Evenings and was always eager to speak and report on changes being talked about in the higher echelons at Lords.  Despite failing health he still tried to attend, and offered his apologies for being unable to speak.  A true gentleman he will long be remembered and greatly missed by all who knew him.  We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Elizabeth and their families.
We will also remember the unfortunate accident which occurred at St. Helens, Swansea in July which caused the sudden death of Alcwyn Jenkins, a former member of our Management Committee, and a much respected umpire.  We extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
The 2009 season was another wet one and virtually all of the last month of the Under 16’s Competition was wiped out.  It was one of the wettest on record with a total of 294 of the scheduled 784 league matches being abandoned.  There was only one week throughout the season which saw every match played.  Our Cup competitions were also badly affected with matches finally being played weeks after the scheduled play by date.
Fortunately the wet weather kept away for a short time, allowing our scheduled league semi-final play-offs and some of our league and cup finals to be played.  The finals week saw the first five finals played, but unfortunately the Under 14 and Under 16 League Finals could not be played to a conclusion.  It is planned that, weather permitting, these games will be played in early May 2010.

Unfortunately only two of the delayed 2008 finals were played with Pontarddulais defeating Llanelli ‘A’ in the Under 13’s Cup Final in May, and Mumbles defeating Swansea in the Under 15’s Cup Final in the gloom in August.

The league embarked on its second overseas tour, with an Under 17’s squad travelling to Barbados, in February.  Although results on the field were not very good, we came up against some very strong teams and two of the players from the Wanderers Academy Kraig Brathwaite and Justin Holder featured in the Barbados XI which played England the following week.

Match 1 – Alleyne School 179-7 (29 overs) League 145-8 League lost by 34 runs.

Match 2 – Welches Academy 222-5 (30 overs) League 130 all out (23.3 overs) League lost by 92 runs.

Match 3 – Wanderers Academy 290-4 (35 overs) (Kraig Brathwaite 117, Justin Holder 101) League 110 all out (25 overs) League lost by 180 runs.

Match 4 – Lester Vaughan School 267-3 (35 overs) League 141 all out  League lost by 126 runs.

Match 5 – Phoenix Academy 204-5 (35 overs) League 180-9 League lost by 24 runs.

Following the death of Bill Edwards members of the Management Committee were unanimous in their nomination of Russell Davies as our new President.  Russell has supported the annual Lords Trip since he played in the past v present fixture during our 21st Anniversary season.  He began playing cricket in the Junior League for Gorseinon, he is a member of the MCC and currently lives in Blackburn where he works as a Barrister.
